Norden: Music of the Nordic Countries

Our concert, string and senior orchestras will present a program of delightful music from our northern neighbours. Sibelius’ “Finlandia”, Grieg’s “Norwegian Dances” and Jon Liefs “Rimnadanslog” or “Icelandic Folk Dances” will be featured. Other great pieces of the Nordic Countries will be performed by the concert and string orchestras as well.

“Brim” which is Iceland’s largest fishing company is the featured sponsor for this concert.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals take place on Sunday afternoons from September through May. Our rehearsals typically take place between 2:30 pm and to 5:30 pm at the MUN School of Music. Depending on which ensemble the musician is participating in, the following schedule should be followed:

Senior Orchestra: 2:30 – 5:30 pm
String Orchestra 3-4:30 pm
Concert Orchestra 4-5:30 pm
There will generally be a break halfway into each rehearsal. Musicians are asked to bring a light snack with them.

Attendance at all rehearsals, dress rehearsals, concerts and performances is a compulsory requirement of Calos membership. When joining Calos, both the member and family must be prepared to take on all of the season’s commitments. The limited-time available for orchestral development and preparation requires maximum attendance. Orchestra rehearsals are team activities and every musician makes a unique and valuable contribution to the music-making at our rehearsals. In the brass, woodwind, and percussion sections, there is only one member on each different part. Even in the string sections, there may be only one or two members on each part. In order to rehearse and perform as an orchestra, all parts of the music must be present, therefore all members must be present.
Before committing to the 2019-20 season, families should take note of the mandatory activities. If a member cannot participate in a mandatory activity, his/her participation in the remainder of the season may be at risk. The mandatory activities will be listed in bold in the season schedule.

On occasion, musicians might experience conflict with another activity. With consultation with the Executive Director and the musical director, a special arrangement can be made to accommodate the conflict.
